Typing lesson 15 of 17

Typing numbers 2 and 9

Lesson 15 gives the ring fingers their numbers: 2 above W for the left ring finger, and 9 above O for the right. The ring fingers are the hardest to move on their own, so this pair rewards going slowly.

How to practice

  1. Reach from home and come back, as the drills do: s2s and l9l.
  2. Let the ring finger go alone. The middle finger likes to follow it up; keep it on D or K.
  3. Go slowly enough to be right. A wrong digit is harder to spot than a misspelled word, so accuracy matters even more with numbers.

Practice text

The text mixes common words with numbers made only of the digits learned so far, most of them with this lesson’s new digits, and a short drill for each new digit from its finger’s home key: s2s, l9l. Two rounds as the trainer writes them; each round draws new numbers and words:

s2s free 733 their 399 229 99 said 392 29 27 99 l9l am great should could 44 keep 2

her 42 many 7 9322 again up 3 987 l9l 9293 2 9 are team through 2998 and 2932 s2s

Common mistakes

  • Swapping neighbors. 2 and 3, or 8 and 9, sit side by side under neighboring fingers.
  • The middle finger doing the ring finger’s job. It reaches more easily, but then 3 and 8 lose their finger.

Frequently asked questions

Which finger types 9?

The right ring finger, two rows up from L, above O. The left ring finger types 2, above W.

Why are numbers harder to type than words?

A common word is a pattern your fingers know as one movement; a number usually isn’t, so each digit is a choice of its own, and a wrong one is harder to spot when you read it back. That is why these lessons pass on accuracy, not speed.

How do I pass lesson 15?

Type a round at 95% accuracy or better in which both 2 and 9 were typed right at least once. A lesson round is at most 30 words, and you can try again as often as you like: start lesson 15.

What comes after lesson 15?

Lesson 16 adds 1 and 0. Once you pass lesson 15, the next round starts it, and you can go back to any lesson whenever you like.
