Typing lesson 14 of 17
Typing numbers 3 and 8
Lesson 14 adds the middle fingers’ numbers: 3 above E for the left middle finger, and 8 above I for the right. It is the same move on both hands, two rows up from D and K.
Keys and fingers
- Pinky
- Ring finger
- Middle finger
- Index finger
- Thumbs (space bar)
- Pale: keys from earlier lessons
- Outlined: home keys
| Key | Finger | Where it is |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | Left middle finger | Two rows up from D |
| 8 | Right middle finger | Two rows up from K |
How to practice
- Think of the letter under it. 3 belongs to the finger that types E, one row further up, and 8 to the finger that types I.
- Reach from home and come back, as the drills do: d3d and k8k.
- Keep your wrists still. Let the finger stretch rather than the hand move, so the index fingers stay ready for 4 and 7.
Practice text
The text mixes common words with numbers made only of the digits learned so far, most of them with this lesson’s new digits, and a short drill for each new digit from its finger’s home key: d3d, k8k. Two rounds as the trainer writes them; each round draws new numbers and words:
back 37 find 833 8 8 another please 38 33 333 383 d3d going 338 need good next 8843 k8k
people 388 someone second 388 48 838 k8k 33 3838 3833 3 8 can with end well 3 d3d same
Common mistakes
- Swapping neighbors. 3 and 4 sit side by side under neighboring fingers, and so do 7 and 8. Slow down until each finger knows its own key.
- Hunting with one finger. It’s tempting to find the numbers with the index finger alone. Let each finger keep its own column, as it does for the letters.
Frequently asked questions
Why do the numbers come in pairs?
Each pair is one finger making the same move on each hand: 3 and 8 are the middle fingers reaching two rows up. The letter lessons pair their keys the same way, so each lesson trains one motion.
How do I type numbers without looking?
The way you learned the letters: from the home row, with the same finger every time. Each digit sits two rows above a home key, in the column of a letter the same finger already types. Our guide to not looking at the keyboard has more.
How do I pass lesson 14?
Type a round at 95% accuracy or better in which both 3 and 8 were typed right at least once. A lesson round is at most 30 words, and you can try again as often as you like: start lesson 14.
What comes after lesson 14?
Lesson 15 adds 2 and 9. Once you pass lesson 14, the next round starts it, and you can go back to any lesson whenever you like.
