About TypingPractice.ai

TypingPractice.ai is a free typing trainer that times every keystroke to find the keys, key pairs and habits that slow you down, then builds practice text around them.

What it does

Most typing practice gives everyone the same text. TypingPractice.ai starts with a short baseline round and times every keystroke: how long you take to reach each key, which keys you miss and what you hit instead, and which two-key moves slow you down. It compares each key and each move with your own average, then fills practice rounds with the ones that cost you the most. As they improve, the targets move on.

  • Learning to type: twelve short lessons that add a few keys at a time, with an on-screen keyboard that shows which finger to use, and stars instead of a speed score.
  • Touch typing: a keyboard guide with finger colors and hands under the text, which fades key by key as you learn each one by feel.
  • Speed and accuracy: a pacer to race, stop on error, a 15, 30 or 60-second typing test, and a habits page with your slow keys, common slips and progress by day.

Practice and the test are free, with no account needed to start. Signing in with Google, also free, keeps your progress in your account so it follows you to other devices. Optional AI features write practice text for your level and review your habits; they send OpenAI only a summary of your typing numbers, as the privacy page explains.

Where the numbers come from

Your own numbers come from your own keystrokes: words per minute count the characters you typed correctly, divided by five, per minute, and accuracy is the share of keystrokes that hit the right key.

Comparisons with other typists come from the largest published study of typing, Dhakal, Feit, Kristensson and Oulasvirta (CHI 2018), which analyzed 136 million keystrokes from 168,960 people who took an online typing test. Its average was 51.56 words per minute. Where a guide or result says how you compare, the percentage is computed from that study’s published distribution, so the guides, the typing test and your results always agree.

How we write our guides

The typing guides answer the questions people ask about typing: how fast is fast, how to get faster and more accurate, where your fingers go, and how to teach children. Each one follows the same rules:

  • The answer comes first. The opening sentences answer the question in the title; the rest explains it.
  • Every number has a source. Facts and figures come from peer-reviewed studies and official standards, linked where they appear and listed at the end of each guide, with a DOI where there is one.
  • Checked against the sources. We use AI tools to help research and draft, and every claim is checked against the study or standard it cites before a guide is published or updated. Where research disagrees, the guide says so.
  • Dated and kept current. Each guide shows when it was last updated, and is revised when better evidence or a new feature changes the advice.
  • No paid placements. Guides recommend TypingPractice.ai only where it does what the guide describes, and never mention products for money.
