How to practice

  1. Reach up with the ring finger alone, and bring it back to S or L.
  2. Let the ring finger do the work. If it feels clumsy, slow down rather than let the middle finger take over.
  3. Keep the pinky on its home key while the ring finger beside it reaches.
  4. Mind the slant. Like E and I, these keys sit up and a little to the left of their home keys.

Common mistakes

  • O and W mixed up. The same finger on opposite hands: the wrong hand moved first.
  • I for O. The middle finger reaching for the ring finger’s key. Each key keeps its own finger.
  • Landing next door. P is next to O, and Q and E are next to W. Reach up from the home key, a short distance.
  • The wrist turning. Ring-finger reaches tempt the wrist to twist. Keep it straight and let the finger move.
