Typing lesson 7 of 17
Typing lesson 7: C, N and M
C, N and M are the first keys on the bottom row. Your left middle finger reaches down from D to C, and your right index finger reaches down from J to M, and down and to the left for N. With them, 3,500 of the 5,547 words in the word bank use only the letters so far.
Keys and fingers
- Pinky
- Ring finger
- Middle finger
- Index finger
- Thumbs (space bar)
- Pale: keys from earlier lessons
- Outlined: home keys
| Key | Finger | Where it is |
|---|---|---|
| C | Left middle finger | Down from D |
| N | Right index finger | Down and left from J |
| M | Right index finger | Down from J |
How to practice
- Curl down, then come back. A bottom-row key takes a small curl of the finger rather than a stretch. Return to the home row after each one.
- Go slowly when N and M meet. Both belong to the right index finger, so typing one right after the other means the same finger moves twice.
- Keep your wrists straight, so the fingers can curl down freely.

Common mistakes
- N and M mixed up. One finger, two keys side by side: if one comes out for the other, the reach was a little short or long.
- C with the index finger. C belongs to the left middle finger, down from D.
- Landing on X or V. The keys on either side of C. Reach down from D, a short distance.
- Looking down for the bottom row. Check the keyboard guide on screen instead: it shows the finger and the reach for the next key.
