Typing lesson 17 of 17

Typing numbers 5 and 6

The last lesson stretches the index fingers to the middle of the number row: 5 for the left, up and right from F, and 6 for the right, up and left from J. With them every digit is in, so the practice text uses numbers of every kind.

How to practice

  1. Stretch from home and come back, as the drills do: f5f and j6j. It is the same finger that types 4 and 7, one key further in.
  2. Use the same finger for 6 every time. Here 6 goes to the right index finger, as most charts teach it. Some courses give it to the left index finger; either works if you always use the same one.
  3. Type a number as one move. By now every digit has its finger, so read 2056 as a whole and let the fingers take it.

Practice text

The text mixes common words with numbers made only of the digits learned so far, most of them with this lesson’s new digits, and a short drill for each new digit from its finger’s home key: f5f, j6j. Two rounds as the trainer writes them; each round draws new numbers and words:

j6j same show 46 5655 against number 56 26 8615 years end 639 really f5f 26 66 50 by 55

652 56 55 5563 46 come 65 335 has really f5f did if j6j well 3495 both 612 53 life

Common mistakes

  • Mixing up 5 and 6. They sit side by side in the middle of the row, on different hands. A slip there usually means the hand moved instead of the finger.
  • Lifting the whole hand. The stretch is long; let the index finger reach while the others stay home.

Frequently asked questions

Which finger types 6?

The right index finger, as most charts teach it and as the keyboard guide shows. Some courses give it to the left index finger instead; both work, as long as you always use the same one.

Why are 5 and 6 the last numbers?

They are the index fingers’ longest reach on the number row, sideways as well as up, and the easiest to type with the wrong hand. Learning the straight reaches first gives every finger its column before this stretch.

How do I pass lesson 17?

Type a round at 95% accuracy or better in which both 5 and 6 were typed right at least once. A lesson round is at most 30 words, and you can try again as often as you like: start lesson 17.

What comes after the last lesson?

Once you pass lesson 17, practice moves on to adaptive rounds: text built around the keys and key pairs that slow you down, found from your own typing. Every lesson stays open to practice again.
