For teachers
Typing races for your class
Run a live typing race from the front of the room in two minutes. Students join with a code and a first name: no accounts, no ads, nothing to install. Free.
How a class race works
- 1
Start a class race
Sign in with Google and start a class race (the button above, or Race, then Race your friends). Under For a class, choose to run it from the front without racing.
- 2
Put it on the big screen
Show on a big screen puts the way in on your projector: the race page and a six-letter code, then who has joined.
- 3
Students join
On any computer, students go to typingpractice.ai/race, type the code and a first name. No account and no email, up to 60 in one race. When everyone is in, close the race to newcomers.
- 4
Set the rules
Choose the accuracy that counts: 90% for younger typists and 95% for older ones is a good start. Pick plain text (no capitals or punctuation) for beginners, or race a text of your own, such as a passage from the book you are reading.
- 5
Race, then keep the results
Everyone sees the standings with speed and accuracy, and the big screen shows the podium. Download the results as a spreadsheet, and print a certificate for everyone who finished. Race again with one click.
Accuracy first
Speed follows accuracy, so a race only counts a result at the accuracy you set, and the results show everyone’s accuracy beside their speed. A common rough guide for school typing goals is about 5 words per minute times the grade, so 20 for a fourth grader, with accuracy above 90% before speed. Lessons and practice on TypingPractice.ai slow down on the keys each typist misses, and the races are for the fun of using it.
More for your class
- Seventeen typing lessons, from the home row to the number row, with a keyboard that shows which finger to use.
- Typing tests from 15 seconds to 5 minutes, with a certificate to show.
- Story adventures for younger typists, with stickers to win.
- Practice that finds each typist’s slow and missed keys and works on them, and a daily passage that is the same for everyone.
Privacy in plain words
- No ads, and no analytics company or other trackers.
- Students don’t need accounts for a class race. The race server keeps the names they type in memory while the race runs and forgets them when the last person leaves.
- Results stay with you: the spreadsheet and the certificates are made in your browser, not on our servers.
- Signing in is optional. Google sign-in asks only for a name, email address and profile picture, and keeps a typist’s progress on every device.
The privacy page has every detail. For your school’s IT team, setup for schools lists the sites to allow and how to let students sign in with school Google accounts.
