TypingPractice.ai

For schools

Setup for your school’s IT team

A teacher can run a class typing race that students join with a code and a first name: no accounts. This page lists what the site needs on a school network, and how to let students sign in with their school Google accounts if you want them to.

Sites to allow

  • typingpractice.ai and www.typingpractice.ai: the site itself.
  • race.typingpractice.ai: the typing race, over a secure WebSocket (wss://).
  • api.typingpractice.ai: anonymous usage counts, never linked to a student.
  • accounts.google.com: only for signing in, which class races don’t need.

It is a typing practice site for education, with no games store, chat or ads. If your web filter blocks it, ask your filter’s vendor to list it under education.

Letting students sign in with Google

Signing in is optional: it keeps a student’s progress on every device. Since October 2023, Google Workspace for Education blocks users designated as under 18 from third-party apps their admin hasn’t configured, so students see “Access blocked” until you allow the site. TypingPractice.ai asks only for basic sign-in information (openid, email and profile) and reads no other Google data. In the Google Admin console, under Security, Access and data control, API controls, either:

  • allow users to access third-party apps that only request basic info needed for Sign in with Google, for your students’ organizational units; or
  • configure the app by its OAuth client ID, 1011387335638-f5008ha41os3bv5lffhe5l0kibs1m93j.apps.googleusercontent.com, for those units, with Limited access, which is enough to sign in.

Google may ask you to confirm parental consent when you allow an app for users under 18. Teachers can also request access for their students in Google’s own flow. Google’s help on third-party apps for users under 18 has the current steps; its menu names change now and then.

What the site keeps

Without an account, a student’s progress stays in their browser, and a class race’s names stay in the race server’s memory while it runs. Signed in, the site keeps the student’s name, email address, profile picture link and typing progress, to show it on any device. There are no ads, no analytics company and nothing sold. The privacy page has every detail. A contact address for schools is coming soon.
