How to practice

  1. Curl down for each, the index finger to V and the ring finger to X, and come back to the home row.
  2. Keep the middle finger on D while the fingers on either side of it reach.
  3. Keep each finger to its own key. X, C, V and B sit side by side on the bottom row, typed by the ring, middle and index fingers.

Common mistakes

  • B for V. The same index finger, one key over: V is down from F, B is down and to the right.
  • C for X or V. The middle finger reaching for its neighbors’ keys.
  • Z for X. The ring finger’s reach landing one key to the left.
  • Moving the hand down. Only the finger curls; the hand stays on the home row.

Frequently asked questions

Which finger types V and X?

V is your left index finger, down from F. X is your left ring finger, down from S.

Why do V and X come so late?

Once a lesson’s keys take a reach, common letters come before rare ones, so real words arrive early. V and X are in fewer words in the word bank than B and P, the lesson before, and Q and Z, the last letters, are in fewer still.

How do I pass lesson 9?

Type a round at 95% accuracy or better in which both V and X were typed right at least once. A lesson round is at most 30 words, and you can try again as often as you like: start lesson 9.

What comes after lesson 9?

Lesson 10 adds Q and Z. Once you pass lesson 9, the next round starts it, and you can go back to any lesson whenever you like.
