How to practice

  1. Reach up with the index finger and come straight back to the bump on F or J.
  2. Keep the middle finger home. It reaches for E and I, right beside these keys, so let each finger keep to its own key.
  3. Practice the return as much as the reach. Up from the home row and back down to it are two halves of one move.

Common mistakes

  • R and U mixed up. The same finger on opposite hands: if one comes out for the other, the wrong hand moved first.
  • Landing on T or Y. T is next to R and Y next to U, and the same index fingers type them in lesson 5. Reach up, not toward the middle.
  • E for R, or I for U. The middle finger reaching instead of the index finger. Each key has one finger.
  • The hand following the finger. Only the finger moves; the rest of the hand stays where it is.
